Considering his highly irritating, (and to me and many others) disrespectful behaviour at the end of last season, this episode can come as no major surprise. Nonetheless the timing is appalling and the best thing we can take from the present scene of carnage is that no longer will the club, its players and its supporters be at the mercy of a capricious cretin as manager. A wonderful success he has been and I salute his amazing work over the last three seasons, but one thing I have learned about Conte is that to maintain his ‘passion’ and ‘high intensity’ coaching methods requires him to walk a tightrope over an abyss of doom. He has walked as far along the tightrope as he feels comfortable with, and has decided to quit whilst ahead.
Fine. We thank him, and nod in cordial respect, but must all admit he has left a bad taste in the mouth.
I cannot believe that the failure to land Sanchez was a factor…other than perhaps proving to Conte that unless he manages one of the super rich clubs, he will never be able to cherry pick his transfer targets. Still, that was obvious three seasons ago, and is no epiphany.
Vidal? I read a bothersome quote – which I hope and close to assume was fabricated – regarding his position on the Man U move, basically suggesting he is happy to go, or happy to stay. If he did go, I would not be instantly blaming Beppe, or Agnelli, because the most logical assumption would be that they had agreed to pay him double whatever we could afford. As an example, Juan Mata is earning close to 10m EUROS per year whereas Vidal earned 3.4m EUROS last football year. Of course he is due a pay rise, but we simply cannot compete with those kind of figures. And if you were Vidal, had already won three league titles in Italy, and were offered perhaps an extra 5m per season, would you not be tempted?
Some of you seem to live in a dream realm where either our players are purely capital and have no say in their own destiny or we have the money to match the likes of Man U or Man City or Chelsea. Those teams, alongside PSG, Monaco, R Madrid, Barca and Munich can all outspend us on transfer fees and wages. Blame Beppe all you wish but it makes no sense to do so if the players wish to leave to earn staggering increases in wages alongside stronger chances of champions league success.
As for a new manager…Allegri, Spalletti, Mancini and Guidolin are all terrible choices if the aim is to progress. I doubt Deschamps would leave France with an interesting squad and his country hosting the European Championships in 2016.
Klopp or Simeone would be brilliant, though zero chance of either. Heynckes could be superb, but again, I cannot see it happening. Lucescu seems an interesting option. Then there is Bielsa to ponder, but what of his relationship with the lion king eh? Once so strong then battered in his last year in Bilbao. I am sure as professionals they would be fine to reunite.
Others worth a mention are Carlos Bianchi and Capello. The former seems happy at Boca but our old friend Fabio is less welcome presently in Russia after the country’s poor showing in Brazil.
Whilst Montella has shown signs of quality, I feel our squad needs a natural leader to replace Conte, someone they can look up to, a man who has won at club level and has their respect for either managerial or playing careers of the highest order.
Forza Juve
