Tomas Pochettino on his way to Juve

Gianluca Di Marzio broke the story a couple of days back and kindly included a photo of the young Boca Juniors starlet at the airport awaiting his flight to Italy, where it is reported he will sign for Juventus.

We have been chasing the 18 year old midfielder since last Summer, when he starred for Boca Juniors youth side in the Durban U19 tournament. Many journalists placed him as player of the competition, despite his side losing out to fellow south Americans Santos in the semi-finals.

Name: Tomas Pochettino
Position: Midfielder central midfielder
Year of birth: 1996
Height: 181 cm
Foot: Right

Tomas joined Boca Juniors as a 9 year old and went on to represent the club at all subsequent youth levels. His progress has been steady and he is regarded not as a flashy flair merchant but as a budding talent very comfortable on the ball, defensively intelligent with a beautiful range of passing. He is also noted for his striking prowess from distance and ability to find promising positions all over the field.

Very comfortable with the ball at his feet, Pochettino appears closest to Pirlo, with a hint of De Rossi thrown in for good measure. Whilst he must surely bulk up in muscle if he is to make his mark in the cunning realm of calcio, his elegance in possession and long range distribution has marked him out for a very long time as a future star in the making.

After first obtaining his Eu passport, he is set to attend a medical examination over the coming days culminating in his attendance at the crunch champions league tie with Atletico next week. He will likely return to Argentina before moving to Italy on a permanent basis in the New Year where it appears still undecided whether he will enter into our primavera ranks or be loaned to Sassuolo.

Interviewed by the press soon after hitting Italian soil…

You’re just a step away from Juve, now we
I have not signed yet, but tomorrow I will do a medical and then I go back to Argentina.”

What is your opinion of Juve?
“I am delighted by the opportunity to play for Juve, is a club that I really like. It is a very important club in Italy and Europe. “

Now you can play with another former Boca, Tevez. What do you think of him?
Tevez is a phenomenon. He is an idol throughout Argentina for his humility. “

Who are your other idols?
My absolute idol is Messi. I admire Riquelme as a player, is smart: a football genius like Zidane.

What is your favourite position on the field?
“I’m a midfielder, a left volante**”

Juve can play with two of the best midfielders in the world as Pogba and Vidal. What you can learn from them?
“In Vidal I admire the ease with which he scores goals, it is impressive. Pogba enchants me how to play, for the quality, patience and technique he has. They are players that I follow to improve, as well as Di Maria, Reus and Pastore .

What are your best features?
I would say the powerful shot and the change of pace. I am right footed. “

What do you think of Italy?
For all Argentines come in Serie A is a dream, I saw a lot of games of your league.”

Juve saw you at Durban Cup youth tournament that you played with Boca. Is it true that you were not fit?
Yes, I had the groin injury, I almost did not go. During the tournament Juve contacted my agent, I was contacted when I returned to Argentina.

And with the Italian, how well you do?
“I have already started studying for over a month. I am learning the language (said in Italian, ed!).

*- in Brazilian football, the word volante refers to a role which combines the duties of a destructive anchorman with the ball playing prowess of a regista.  He protects the defence as well as acting as the team’s heartbeat, its metronome. The word translates to ‘steering-wheel’ suggesting the player steers the team ship. Whilst defensive zeal is required, to act as a screen in front of the rearguard, the volante is rarely adorned with the frame of an Adonis, instead offering elegance on the ball and judging the flow of the game to perfection to make timely interceptions and create beautiful passes before any opponent realizes the ploy. Very much indeed like the role Pirlo has played for us these last three seasons.
